How to Find the Qibla Direction From Anywhere

The qibla is the direction Muslims face during prayer: toward the Kaaba in Mecca. Facing it is part of the prayer, so knowing how to find it, especially in an unfamiliar place, is worth having down. Here are three dependable methods.

1. Use a qibla compass or app

The simplest method is a qibla compass, either a physical pocket compass or a phone app. It reads your location and points you toward Mecca. Phone apps are convenient, but they rely on your device's magnetometer, which can drift near metal, electronics, or inside a car, so calibrate the compass first and step away from interference.

2. Find a nearby mosque and match its direction

If you are near a mosque, its prayer hall is already aligned to the qibla. Standing inside and facing the front (the direction of the mihrab, the niche in the wall) points you the right way. This is a reliable cross-check when a compass seems off. You can find a mosque near you to confirm the direction in your city.

3. Use the sun on specific dates

Twice a year, the sun passes directly over the Kaaba, and at those moments anywhere the sun is visible, its direction is the qibla. Outside those dates, you can still estimate using the sun's position, but a compass or a known mosque alignment is more practical day to day.

Which way is the qibla in North America?

From most of the United States and Canada, the qibla is roughly northeast, not southeast as many people expect. This surprises travelers, but it follows the shortest path over the curve of the earth (the "great circle" route), which bends north. The exact bearing depends on your city, so use a compass or app for the precise angle.

A note for travelers

When you are on the road, the two fastest options are a qibla app and the nearest mosque. If you pray while traveling, a small travel prayer mat and a pocket qibla compass make it easy to pray correctly anywhere. And if you are heading somewhere new, look up mosques at your destination ahead of time so you know where to go.
